The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree

There is so much going on in this sweet little story, set in the Appalachians during "The Great War." It's Ruthie's family's turn to provide the Christmas tree for the village church. In the spring, she and her father ride high into the mountains and choose the perfect balsam Christmas tree for the village, marking it with her hair ribbon. Her father is called away to be a soldier. Ruthie and her mother struggle, mending clothes and growing food.

Because their family is to provide the tree, Ruthie gets to be the angel in the Christmas pageant.

I won't give away the end, but it's another lovely little story about sacrifice, family and the wonder that is the Christmas story.

Read it. You'll love the sweet illustrations.
